B.P.H.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. The prostate gland normally begins to increase in size, enough to be noticed, as a man moves into his 50's. This enlargement will squeeze the urethra, the space through which the urine flows, and slow down the stream. This can cause a build up of urine in the bladder, this in turn could eventually cause a back up into the kidneys and subsequent kidney damage or failure. Well before this a man would notice not only the weakening stream, but also more frequent visits to the bathroom, day and night. Another sure sign is urgency.

What you need to do if these symptoms occur is visit your Medic. There are prescription drugs which can help, and over the counter products which men claim have had success in treating the problem.

Two points.... BPH is not the first sign of prostate cancer and BPH does not have to mean a TURP operation, new one hour outpatient treatments are now available.

The PHA gather together all the information it can on BPH and publish this information in our quarterly Newsletters. The low cost of the Newsletters means that a subscription is a low cost method of ensuring that you and yours are fully informed about the latest BPH treatments.

PROSTATE CANCER

Prostate Cancer is not like BPH, it normally begins to grow in the outer area of the prostate gland and therefore does not often announce its presence by giving you the same symptoms as BPH. On the other hand it is normally a slow growing cancer and many men have cancer cells and live their full life and die from old age without ever knowing they had these cells present. Some Medics are convinced that taking out the gland as soon as cells are discovered will cure the disease, others are not, the problem is there have been no 10 year trials to establish a 'guaranteed cure'.

Most often, because it rarely gives any outward symptoms in its early stages, prostate cancer is not discovered until it has moved out from the prostate gland and in some cases established secondary growths in other parts of the body. At this stage an operation to remove the gland is not an option and the patient would be offered radiotherapy or probably hormone treatment.

Much like prostatitis this is an under-funded disease. Even a test which can detect a high level of antigen in the blood, (and can indicate a possible prostate cancer) has not been refined to ensure that it is accurate. Little information is available to the general public on the disease, on the tests and treatments, nor on the possible methods of avoiding the disease

The PHA gather together all the information it can on prostate cancer and publish this information in our quarterly Newsletters. The low cost of the Newsletters means that a subscription is a low cost method of ensuring that you and yours are fully informed about the latest prostate cancer news.

The PHA also have a book on prostate cancer published for the layman.

PROSTATITIS

Prostatitis is an ignored, non-researched, non-funded disease. It can cause debilitating pain, and as your Medic may be unable to find any bacteria, you may find yourself noted as having a sexually transmitted disease, or it may be suggested that you need the help of a psychiatrist. Only you and others with the disease know how completely it can take over your life and sometimes totally destroy it. It can change your personality and break up your marriage or relationship.

Prostatitis can give you lower back pan, deep pain between the scrotum and the anus, chills and fever. Difficulty, frequency and pain when passing water; a major problem is discomfort whilst sitting.

Chronic bacterial prostatitis can also produce a watery discharge, pain on ejaculation, cystitis, and sometimes irritation which can cause premature ejaculation. Blood can appear in the semen and there can also be a swelling of the testes.

The PHA gather together all the information it can on prostatitis and publish this information in our quarterly Newsletters. The low cost of the Newsletters means that a subscription is a low cost method of ensuring that you and yours are fully informed about the latest prostatitis news.

PROSTATE HELP ASSOCIATION.

The PHA (A Registered Charity) began in the Autumn of 1993 and have Quarterly Newsletters and Information sheets on all aspects of prostate dis-ease. Over that period of time we have sent our information to over 50,000 enquiries, liased/given interviews with Radio producers including BBC Overseas; TV producers/researchers; with newspaper and freelance journalists. We were able to introduce them to prostate sufferers, or to provide them all with vital information to enable them to complete their prostate assignments.

General Information.

Much of the general population still appears to think that any prostate disease is an "old mans' disease". The PHA knows from letters received that young men in their teens have prostatitis which can totally disrupt their social and working lives, and men in their 40's have and die from, prostate cancer. Even BPH, benign prostate enlargement, firmly classified in the publics mind as an old mans disease, (do you need to be reminded of Private Godfrey in Dad's Army ?), affects tens of thousands of men still in their 50's. This 'brain washing' has meant that the majority of men under 60 totally ignore the symptoms of the disease and remain ignorant of its serious consequencies, 96% of men according to a 1994 Mori poll knew nothing at all about the prostate gland.

This lack of knowledge has meant that prostate disease is the Cinder-fella disease. The major operation to treat BPH and regarded as the 'Gold Standard' treatment, not cure you will note, was developed seventy years ago and has hardly changed since, although it is true that the 'tools of the trade' have been and are being refined. New techniques are finding it very difficult to make a mark, even though, in at least one case, the success rate is as good as the 'gold standard' turp, yet without the possible side effects of the turp operation.

A mass educational effort is needed to alert the public to this underfunded disease. The PHA do their best but are held back by lack of funds. The U.K. government spends none of your money on education and virtually none on research. You can help by subscribing to our Newsletters, sending a donation or even writing to your MP drawing his attention to the low priority accorded prostate disease.

Find out more about all aspects of the prostate condition by subscribing to the PHA Newsletters. The PHA also have a list of Support Names, and a number of special publications which go into detail in regard to the TURP operation and the new TURAPY treatment for instance.
