Proscar

Proscar is a 5mg tablet of finasteride a drug which was shown in early clinical tests to shrink the prostate glands of a percentage of men who took it. However 'Practice Nursing' in September 1996 reported a study carried out by the US Veterans Administration which showed that Proscar whilst decreasing the size of the prostate after some 6 months did not improve the symptoms. The report apparently found no advantage for finasteride compared with a placebo, or in the combination of finasteride and an alpha blocker compared with the alpha blocker alone.

Proscar needs to be taken for 6 months, then if found to be beneficial continued indefinitely. If the treatment is stopped then the prostate gland starts to enlarge again. Proscar apparently has the following side effects, impotence, decreased sexual function, a decrease in the volume of ejaculate and breast tenderness/ swelling.

Proscar effects the PSA (prostate specific antigen) reading and your medic should be aware of this so that he can compensate when blood test results are being judged so that prostate cancer activity is not masked by the treatment. Females should be aware of the tablets and should not handle them and a condom should be used to prevent exposure to semen.
