Thermex
(Trans-Urethral Radio-Frequency (TURF) Thermotherapy)
- is proven in clinical trials and routine usage to be an
effective alternative to traditional prostate surgery in the
treatment of moderate - to- severe symptomatic BPH.
Turapy
(Trans-Urethral Ablative Prostatectomy) - is a safe,
feasible and effective *
alternative to surgery for obstructive BPH.
*(Urology March 1995)
- Both are single-session, anaesthesia free, out
patient treatments which are carried out in an ordinary
patient room or day-care unit.
- Both have a zero mortality rate.
- Both have a low incidence of side-effects which are
relatively minor and transient when they do occur. The
most serious side·effect is acute retention which is
corrected by catheterisation for a period, until the
swollen prostate returns to its normal size..
- The company advise that neither has any adverse
effect on ejaculation, potency or sexual function; and
neither causes incontinence. However, as the TURAPY
treatment ablates (destroys) prostate tissue which
creates much of the ejaculate material; obviously the
ejaculation sensation is much degraded.
- Both treatments take around one hour and cause
minimal disruption to lifestyle. Most patients go home
immediately and are able to resume their normal routine
lifestyle right away. (This assumes they are able to
manage successfully with an indwelling catheter whilst in
retention). The writer did not have his catheter removed
for almost 4 weeks and found it took a full 6 weeks to
regain his full energy levels following a
TURAPY.
- In those cases where treatment is not successful it
does not preclude nor inhibit any other treatments which
might be carried out subsequently.
